Mexico Will Not Limit GM Corn Imports From the U.S. - Mexican Ag Minister
During a meeting with the U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Mexico’s Agriculture Minister Victor Villalobos said Mexico will not limit GM corn imports from the U.S.
Late last year Mexico announced an executive order calling for the banning of GMO corn for human consumption by 2024, pledging to fill the demand gap with local production. However, the parameters of the original declaration were vague - not outlining exactly what products or processing industries would be affected.
In this latest meeting, Villalobos clarified that Mexico, which is the second largest buyer of U.S. corn after China, will not allow the domestic cultivation of GM corn, but will allow imports of GM yellow corn from the U.S. “for agro industries”.
