Merit Functional Foods Reaches Commercial Production of Canola Protein

Merit Functional Foods, a joint venture company of Burcon NutraScience Corporation - a leading global developer of clean-label, plant-based proteins for food and beverages - has achieved commercial production of Puratein - its novel line of canola proteins.

Canola is the world’s second most popular oilseed behind soybeans, and Burcon’s team has worked for more than two decades to unlock the full nutritional and functional properties of canola proteins. Now, Merit’s new state-of-the-art, plant-based protein production complex is the first and only such commercial-scale facility capable of producing food-grade canola proteins. These proteins will give food and beverage companies the ability to boost the nutritional profile of their products while remaining dairy-free, soy-free, grain-free, and gluten-free. In the coming weeks, Merit plans to continue to optimize its manufacturing process with expectations of fulfilling commercial commitments in Q2.
