The NGFA is Working to Digitize Barge Grain Trading

The National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA) is working to digitize barge grain trading in order to reduce costs and raise system efficiencies.

Toward this end, the association announced a partnership with essDOCS, a global technology company present in 203 countries working with companies and banks looking to shift into digital trade and logistics for their operations.

The digitized model will be based on the company’s CargoDocs platform, which will initially focus on addressing barge bills of lading on southbound traffic for corn, soybeans, wheat, DDGs, and soybean meal on the Mississippi River, but will eventually be expanded to include other transport routes including the Columbia and Snake River systems in the Pacific Northwest.

Work on developing the system is currently being conducted, and projections are that by the first half of 2020 user development and training will be underway for the system to become fully operational. Once fully up, the digital system is designed to digitize between 70,000 and 100,000 barge bills of lading per year.
