Sorghum Approved by EPA as Eligible Renewable Fuel Feedstock

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved sorghum oil as an eligible feedstock under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

The move by the EPA comes after more than two years of work by the National Sorghum Producers (NSP) to create a biofuels channel for sorghum oil, which will provide an additional market option for U.S. sorghum farmers, and adds a layer of value to the crop.

In December of last year, the EPA released a report showing that biodiesel produced from sorghum oil has an 82 percent savings of greenhouse gas emissions, allowing the nine ethanol plants that are extracting sorghum oil the option to sell in the biodiesel market. This will, in turn, result in additional facilities buying and processing sorghum, and higher rates of investment along the sorghum belt.
