French GMO Labeling Law to Impact Animal Feed Sector
France’s National Assembly has passed a law proposed by the environmental group, France Nature Environment, requiring that all foods sold on the French market must be labeled if any GMOs have been used at any point in its production.
This requirement will apply even to animals fed with GMO feed, including “feed from animal origins fed with GMOs”. This law has been adopted to resolve the current standards in France with do not require animals fed with GMO feeds to be labeled as such, and will apply to both primary products such as meat, eggs, and dairy, as well as to the products made with these ingredients.
If successfully passed by France’s Senate, it is feared that such a requirement would translate to exorbitant costs for sourcing non-GMO feed at sufficient scale to feed the country’s herds of animals, which are currently fed with GMO feeds.
