A new consortium consisting of more than a dozen Manitoba First Nations led by Peguis First Nation Chief Glenn Hudson, entrepreneurs, and private Canadian company iChurchill Inc., have reached an agreement with Omnitrax to take over operations of the Hudson Bay Railway, the Port of Churchill, and its adjacent assets.
The Port of Churchill is the only deep water Arctic port in North America, and its closure three years ago has deeply affected many grain producers. Additionally, sections of the rail line were washed out in May 2017 making it inoperable.
After working on developing its plan for months, the consortium plans to post requests for proposals for the repairs, stating that for commercial success, the line cannot be dedicated to only passenger service or the delivery of consumer goods, but must also conduct significant commercial activity.
