A new grain port being constructed by Heilongjiang Shipping Group and Dongjin Group in Fuyuan, in northeast China, will serve to connect Russia with China.
Built with the purpose of creating new shipping routes for grain harvested in Russia, the port will connect Khabarovsk and Nikolayevsk-on-Amur ports in Russia and ports in the Sea of Japan and South China and will cost $48 million.
Chinese companies have stepped up their planting of grain in Russia to meet demand on the Chinese market, however, transportation has been carried out by ground routes. The opening of this port in Fuyuan is expected to dramatically cut grain transportation costs.
Currently, in the first phase of construction, the port in Heilongjiang Province will have an annual throughput of 150,000 tons when this phase is completed. Upon the completion of the second phase of construction, expected in September 2019, annual capacity will increase to 650,000 tons.
