After Bumper Harvest, Australian Grain Exports at Record Levels

After a bumper 2016/17 harvest, Australia’s grain exports are breaking all records, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Overall total grain exports for the seven months ending in April totaled 24.06 million tons - a significant 13 percent higher than the previous record set for the same time period in 2011/12 of 21.24 million tons.

Regionally, South Australia, where Viterra dominates all grain handling and exports, is leading in terms of grain exports. Between December 1 and May 31, 4.8 million tons were handled through Viterra’s South Australian ports - a volume that is equal to the company’s numbers in 2011/12. However this year, there remains heavy bookings for continued shipments at a time when bookings tend to slow down.

As far as destinations, between October and March, Australian grain shipments to India, the Philippines, and China have all more than doubled compared to the same time period last year.
