Marubeni’s Columbia Grain Enters U.S. Edible Oil Industry

Columbia Grain, a fully-owned subsidiary of Japan’s Marubeni Corp., has agreed to acquire a stake in Montana Specialty Mills LLC (MSM) in Great Falls, Montana. The deal gives Columbia Grain a foothold in the crushing and refining industry within the non-GMO and organic U.S. edible oil sector.

MSM sources canola, mustard seeds, and other grains from Montana farmers and processes them into organic and non-GMO edible oils and mustard products for sale across the U.S. market. Due to the growing demand for organic and non-GMO products, the company plans to build a new state-of-the-art oilseed crushing plant in Great Falls in the coming year that will have a crush capacity of 182 tons per day and a processing capacity of 60 tons per day.

This deal with Columbia Grain will provide MSM with the needed origination and storage capacity and a stable supply of canola and other crops to support its expansion plans.
