The EPA Sets Final Renewable Fuel Standard Volumes
On November 23 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set its final increases in renewable fuel volume requirements.
Between 2016 and 2017 the total renewable fuel volume is set to increase six percent, or by 1.2 billion gallons.
The agency announced that non-advanced or “conventional” renewable fuel volumes for 2017 will meet the 15 billion gallon congressional target, while volumes set for advanced biofuels including biomass-based diesel, cellulosic biofuel, and others will increase 19 percent over 2016 levels for 2017.
Both the National Corn Growers Association and the American Soybean Association applaud the raised standards as a move in the right direction to support farmers at an economically difficult time and to reduce dependence on foreign oil. However, the American Soybean Association stated that it would like to see higher volumes set for U.S.-produced biodiesel.
