New York Port Begins Project to Increase Grain Trade
Officials have broken ground on a $2.6 million expansion project at the Port of Ogdensburg, New York.
The project, which is designed to increase grain trade through the port, will include the construction of two additional 800 ton grain storage bins, a new conveyor system, and the upgrading and restoration of two rail bridges.
The Port of Ogdensburg is the last deepwater port for exports from the Great Lakes, and given its proximity to Canada, the port is being seen as a means to grow the local economy. The project was originally scheduled to begin in 2017, however Senator Patricia A. Ritchie of New York requested that it be moved up as it will give farmers better access by both rail and water to new and larger markets.
