Asia Likely to Be Key to Growth for Australian Barley Industry

Australia dominates the world’s barley market, accounting for 40 percent of total global trade in malting barley and 20 percent of the total feed barley trade.

China currently imports 2.9 million tons of barley valued at A$873 million from Australia each year making it the largest buyer from the world’s top supplier according to the Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The barley that China imports is largely used for food production or malting, however, a shift in buyer sentiment is occurring due to domestic Chinese policies, driving more Chinese buyers toward Australia’s high quality, clean barley for animal feed.

With new uses opening up for Australian barley in China and Japan being a second key market for Australian exports, Asian markets are being identified as key to fueling future growth in the Australian industry.
