Blumberg Grain Officially Opens Grain Command Center in Cairo

U.S.-based food security company, Blumberg Grain, has officially opened its new Command and Control Center in Cairo, Egypt, according to a company press release.

The center, which is part of the Egyptian government’s Shouna Development Project launched in Alexandria earlier this year, is a management system that monitors grain and crops in real time as they are deposited by farmers, then processed, stored, and distributed to customers and retailers.

"Food security has become a growing concern across the world. In Egypt, the loss of wheat and other grains has been detrimental to the national economy. The launch of Blumberg Grain's Command and Control Center is a major milestone in food security technology here in Egypt," said Blumberg Partners' Chairman and CEO, Philip Blumberg in a company statement.

The systems utilized by the Command and Control Center will be able to track every bag of grain from the minute it enters the distribution network, making it the most technologically advanced and comprehensive grain storage system in the Middle East. Encompassing 11.4 million square feet of warehousing, the centers will be able to process 11.7 million tons of grain per year and store 2.35 million tons, or 27 kilograms of wheat per Egyptian citizen at any given time.

“We have never been able to track food supplies like this before,” said Dr. Khaled Hanafy, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade. “We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with Blumberg Grain and seeing further revitalization of Shouna grain network in the near future."

Once the entire Shouna network is fully operational, the Blumberg Grain Command and Control Center will use sensor technologies and satellite feeds to supply detailed information including status maps of the 294 Blumberg Grain Aggregation and Processing Centers, trading data, inventory management data, live video feeds, and commodity pricing. The system will also be able to monitor weather patterns and warn of oncoming sand storms giving operators advanced notice in order to engage emergency protocols to protect the grain.

Commenting on the advancement of the Shouna Development Project, Philip Blumberg, chairman of Blumberg Partners stated in a company release, "If in the near future, we can commence Phase 2 of the Shouna Development Project, we are prepared to announce and begin construction of a major Middle East and North Africa Manufacturing Plant and Export Hub in Egypt. Our Manufacturing Plant investment, would be the beginning of our $250 million investment program in agriculture in Egypt."
