P&H Milling Group to Build $45M Bulk Flour Mill in Ontario

P&H Milling Group and the Ontario agriculture minister announced that the company is planning to build a $45 million bulk flour mill at Hamilton port in the province, according to CBC.com.

The company is investing $40 million toward the completion of the project, and the government of Ontario is contributing $5 million for the mill, which will be the first of its kind built in the province in 75 years.

The Port of Hamilton has seen steady growth in the volume of agricultural cargo it handles, increasing from 9% of total tonnage in 2008 to 20% of total tonnage in 2014, and the agri-food sector has grown to account for more than $1.5 billion in economic activity according to data from the Hamilton Port Authority, reports CBC.

Hamilton mayor, Fred Eisenberger stated that the project is indicative of Hamilton’s growing “food cluster”, and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Jeff Leal, noted that the investment in the flour mill will contribute to Hamilton becoming a ‘major player’ in light of the two key 21st century public policy issues of food security and fresh water.
