Australian Export Grain Innovation Center Shows Victorian Wheat Yields Declining

The latest wheat yield ranking maps issued by the Australian Export Grain Innovation Center (AEGIC) indicate that the state of Victoria has only a 10% to 50% chance of achieving even average wheat yields.

Rainfall has been sufficient to sustain the growing of crops, but factors including heat and moisture are beginning to create yield penalties after crops in Victoria were planted at lower soil moisture levels that in Western or South Australia.

NAB Agribusiness general manager, Khan Horne, states that crop production could show ‘variable outcomes’ after the bank lowered its Victoria wheat crop estimate by 23% in its June forecast, adding that rainfall amounts in late August and September will be a critical factor.
