CBH has Exported Western Australia’s Largest Grain Shipment on Record

The CBH Group has exported Western Australia’s largest grain shipment on record out of Esperance. The CMB Medoc left port carrying 78,636 tons of feed barley bound for Saudi Arabia, according to CBH Group general manager marketing and trading, Jason Craig.

"Saudi Arabia is the largest feed barley importer in the world, requiring 7.5 to 8 million tons per year. It's a great opportunity for us to supply this growing market, with Saudi Arabia's population growth set to fuel an increase in exports,” says Craig.

The record shipment follows a record harvest of 15.85 million tons, a record shipment of canola out of Albany, and record site receivals. However, such volumes present logistical challenges regarding loading and exporting the grain.

"Accommodating the types of large vessels like we've seen in Esperance this time; is a vital part of getting the record harvest out more efficiently,” says David Capper, CBH Group, general manager, operations. "It's great to have these larger ships coming into the Western Australia; it gives us more options in handling our large export task."
