Manitoba Canola Reseeding Rate Hits Three Year High

Manitoba canola growers have filed the most reseeding claims in three years due to adverse weather conditions. After cold temperatures and stormy weather killed crops, Manitoba canola farmers will have to reseed the largest acreage area in three years, according to the government-owned Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation.

Freezing temperatures falling as low as 21 degrees Fahrenheit, high winds and sleet caused widespread damage resulting in growers submitting 486 canola reseeding claims as of May 26 – the most since 2012 when 742 claims were registered. Reseeding claims for the oilseed were also responsible for the majority of the 140 reseeding claims filed in Saskatchewan, the country’s largest canola producing region, according to the Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation.
